The GIST Scholarship 2026 is now open for international applicants. Offered by the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), this fully funded scholarship supports students to pursue MS, PhD, and Integrated MS-PhD programs. It is designed to train talented individuals in the fields of science, engineering, and technology. GIST is one of Korea’s most prestigious public research universities, known for its research-driven academic model and collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology of South Korea. All programs are taught in English, and applicants from all nationalities are welcome.

The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) was established in 1993 by the Korean Government with the vision to become a hub of world-class scientific research, innovation, and technological advancement. Since its foundation, GIST has been home to some of South Korea’s most influential researchers, scientists, and lecturers, many of whom have led national and international breakthroughs in science and engineering. GIST stands out as Korea’s first national university to adopt an innovative, foundational science curriculum, integrating cutting-edge research with global educational standards. It was also the first university in Korea to implement a thesis quality certification system, ensuring that every graduate meets a high benchmark of academic excellence.

Due to its consistent commitment to research and innovation, GIST has achieved notable global recognition:

  • Ranked #1 in South Korea for the number of citations per professor for 14 consecutive years
  • Ranked 4th in South Korea in the QS World University Rankings

The GIST Scholarship for International Students is a major step toward fulfilling the university’s mission of becoming a “Proud Creator of Future Science and Technology.” By offering a research-intensive and internationally collaborative environment, GIST provides scholars with the tools to lead in the global tech and science ecosystem.

English is the official language of instruction, so students from around the world can engage deeply in their fields without needing prior Korean language knowledge. However, during their 3, 7, or 8-year stay (for MS, PhD, or Integrated MS/PhD respectively), students will also gain exposure to Korean culture, innovation, and values — creating not just a career-defining academic experience, but also a truly global one.
